Virgin America offers voter registration at 35,000 feet

Travel & Tourism

Virgin America is offering passengers the chance to register for their presidential election vote during their flights.

If airline passengers can get immigration checks out of the way while still en route, then surely there’s a world of other mundane yet necessary tasks that could be taken care of in-flight as well. Take registering to vote, for example. Thanks to a new effort by Virgin America, that’s another chore that can now be handled at 35,000 feet. Virgin America last month launched a new nonstop flight service between its San Francisco home and Washington’s Reagan National Airport, and as part of its inaugural event it teamed up with Rock the Vote to host some surprises for the airline’s first flight guests, including on-board presidential impersonators. Also part of the airline’s partnership with Rock the Vote is a new service that allows fliers to register to vote at 35,000 feet via the airline’s Red in-flight entertainment platform. To do so, passengers on any Virgin America flight need only use their smartphone to scan a QR code on the airline’s Red seatback entertainment platform. A mobile app, powered by PromoJam Social Marketing Platform and Rock the Vote, then allows them to become a registered voter. Voter registration is of course a particularly timely topic in this US election year, but the new service is also a nice example of helping travelers put in-flight time to good use.
