Australian startup brings Wi-Fi to remote farms

Agrinet's system allows farmers to make calls and access the internet anywhere on their land

Spotted: Australian startup Agrinet has created a Wi-Fi internet network for remote farms and rural communities. The system allows farmers to make calls and access the internet anywhere on their land.

Many rural areas lack good internet – or any internet coverage at all, according to the company. Agrinet founder Daniel Winson created the startup to help bridge the technology gap that was harming rural communities. The startup promises reliable service as far as 40 kilometres from the nearest 4G tower. It also say it can create a wireless point to point link from nearby properties.

“We can build you a farm-wide WiFi network, giving you access to Wi-Fi calling and broadband internet everywhere you need it,” the company says. Agrinet services include networks to cover internet “blackspots”. The company can also install wireless cameras for remote management or security. Agrinet says the system will work in other remote locations as well.

Agrinet networks are already available for sale through its website. The startup was also named one of SparkLabs Cultiv8 startups this year.
